Abstract

Abstract This invention relates to modular apparatus comprising: a central processing unit (1); a bus (2) connected to the central processing unit and having means (3) for connecting one or more modules (4) to the bus, each module having memory means (5) storing instructions for controlling operation of the module; means for detecting connection or disconnection of a module to or from the bus; and means for transferring the operating instructions stored in a module (4) to a memory of the central processing unit (1) upon connection of the module (4) to the bus to allow operation of the module (4) to be controlled by the central processing unit (1).

Claim 1
Independent Claim 109 words
Modular apparatus comprising: a central processing unit (1); a bus (2) connected to the central processing unit and having means (3) for connecting one or more modules (4) to the bus (2), each module (4) having memory means (5) storing instructions for controlling operation of the module; means for detecting connection or disconnection of a module (4) to or from the bus (2); and means for transferring the operating instructions stored in a module (4) to a memory of the central processing unit (1) upon connection of the module (4) to the bus to allow operation of the module (4) to be controlled by the central processing unit (1).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 109 words
Modular apparatus comprising: a central processing unit (1); a bus (2) connected to the central processing unit and having means (3) for connecting one or more modules (4) to the bus (2), each module (4) having memory means (5) storing instructions for controlling operation of the module; means for detecting connection or disconnection of a module (4) to or from the bus (2); and means for transferring the operating instructions stored in a module (4) to a memory of the central processing unit (1) upon connection of the module (4) to the bus to allow operation of the module (4) to be controlled by the central processing unit (1).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
Modular apparatus according to Claim 1, including means for inputting data to and outputting data from the central processing unit (1).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
Modular apparatus according to Claim 1 or 2, including means for removing the operating instructions for a module (4) from the central processing unit (1) memory upon disconnection of that particular module.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 18 words
Modular apparatus according to Claim 3, wherein the central processing unit (1) memory comprises a random access memory.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 53 words
Modular apparatus according to Claim 4, wherein, in use, when a module (4) is disconnected from the bus (2) and the operating instructions therefore are removed from the central processing unit (1), the remaining instructions stored in the memory are shifted to maximise the available space in the central processing unit (1) memory.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 14 words
Modular apparatus according to any preceding claim for use in the field of medicine.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 12 words
Modular apparatus according to Claim 6, for use in patient monitoring equipement.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 16 words
Modular apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 16 words
Modular apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 27 words
A module (4) having memory means storing instructions for controlling operation of the module for use in modular apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 9 words
Any novel feature or combination of features described herein.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 9 words
Any novel feature or combination of features described herein.
