Abstract

Abstract A door mirror which is disposed on a door of an automobile is arranged so that it is possible for a mirror housing to be pivoted to a desired position relative to the vehicle body by remote control from the driver's seat. Further, when an impact is applied to the mirror housing, it is favourably tilted either forwardly or rearwardly in terms of the longitudinal direction of the vehicle body such as to be able to lighten the impact. A mirror base (14) secured to the vehicle body is formed with a support shaft (16b) which pivotally supports a mirror housing (12). An electric motor (18) which is actuated by remote control is secured inside the mirror housing (12). A first gear (32) is connected to the output shaft of the motor (18) through a reduction gear. A second gear (52) with a frictional transmission mechanism is disposed on the support shaft engaging the first gear (32). When an impact is applied to the mirror housing, the second gear slides on the support shaft against the frictional force, and the ball comes out of a positioning groove (5), thus causing the mirror housing to tilt in the direction in which the external force acts. To return the mirror housing to its normal position, the motor is actuated by remote control from the inside of the vehicle such as to rotate the first gear around the second gear which is integrated wit the support shaft by means of a frictional force. It is, as a matter of course, possible for the mirror housing to be tilted by remote control from the inside of the vehicle.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 181 words
A remote control side mirror device for a vehicle comprising a mirror housing for rotatably supporting a mirror, a mirror base having a support shaft fixedly secured to an automotive body for supporting said mirror housing rotatably substantially in a traveling direction of the vehicle, drive means fixedly secured to said mirror housing for rotating said mirror housing under a remote control at the support shaft as a center, a reduction gear mechanism connected to said drive means, first gear means connected to said reduction gear mechanism, second gear means held coaxially.with the support shaft and engaged in mesh with said first gear means, and a friction transmitting means interposed between the support shaft and said second gear means, said friction transmitting means for normally stationarily connecting the second gear means to the support shaft by a frictional force so that the stationary connection is released when receiving a predetermined or larger external force to vary the relative angular position to the support shaft of said second gear means when the maximum stationary frictional force or larger external force is received.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 181 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 91 words
The device as claimed in Claim 1 wherein said friction transmitting means comprises a first frictional plate member fixedly secured coaxially to the support shaft, a second frictional plate member disposed oppositely to said first frictional plate member, and elastic means for imparting an elastic force to said second frictional plate member, said second gear means is interposed between said first and said second frictional plate means, and limited in the relative displacement in the direction around the support shaft to the support shaft by being pressed by said elastic means.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 30 words
The device as claimed in Claim 2 wherein said first and second frictional plate members respectively comprise linings on the surfaces of the side oppositely to said second gear means.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 58 words
The device as claimed in any of Claims 1 and 2 wherein said elastic means is disposed coaxially with the support shaft, and composed of a coiled spring, one end of which is fixedly secured to the support shaft, and the other end of which is composed of a coiled spring contacted with said second frictional plate member.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 32 words
The device as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 4 wherein said mirror housing is supported to said mirror base through at least one thrust bearing coaxial with said support shaft.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
The device as claimed in Claim 5 wherein one of said thrust bearings is interposed between said first frictional plate member and said mirror housing.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 45 words
The device as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 6 wherein said mirror housing is arranged with elastic engaging means for engaging itself to said mirror base at a predetermined angular position, and the elastic connection is released when said mirror housing is rotated.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 66 words
The device as claimed in Claim 7 wherein said elastic engaging means comprises a compression coiled spring secured fixedly at one end thereof to any of said mirror housing and said mirror base, and a ball member opposed to said coiled spring, disposed partly in a groove formed in any of said mirror housing and said mirror base, and comprises a ball.member pressed by said spring.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 32 words
The device as claimed in Claims 1 to 8 wherein a guide member moving along the rotating range of said mirror housing is arranged between said mirror housing and said mirror base.
