Abstract

Abstract The disclosure relates to a reusable energy absorbing apparatus (10) comprising a plurality of air chambers (12,14, 16) and valve members (22,24,26). The air chambers (12,14, . 16) and valves (22, 24, 26) close upon the application of an axial force, thereby sealing air within the air chambers (12, 14, 16). After the energy absorbing apparatus (10) has reached the end of its compressive stroke, the valve members (22, 24, 26) release sequentially, thereby venting the pressurized air in the air chambers (12, 14, 16) to minimize rebound.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 17
Claim 1
Independent Claim 71 words
An energy absorbing apparatus comprising: at least one air chamber for partially compressing upon the application of an axial impact force, the air chamber comprising valve means for sealing the air chamber upon the application of the axial force to trap air within the air chamber and for automatically releasing a portion of the air within the air chamber after the air chamber has reached the end of its compressive stroke.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 71 words
An energy absorbing apparatus comprising: at least one air chamber for partially compressing upon the application of an axial impact force, the air chamber comprising valve means for sealing the air chamber upon the application of the axial force to trap air within the air chamber and for automatically releasing a portion of the air within the air chamber after the air chamber has reached the end of its compressive stroke.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
The apparatus of Claim 1 wherein the valve means comprises a pressure activated valve and an inertially activated valve seat configured to seal against the valve.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 17 words
3; The apparatus of Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the air chamber comprises a bellowed wall.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 88 words
A reusable energy absorbing apparatus comprising: a plurality of air chambers for partially compressing upon the application of an axial impact force; each of the air chambers comprising valve means for sealing the air chamber upon the application of the axial impact force to trap air within the air chamber and for automatically releasing a portion of the air within the air chamber after the air chamber has reached the end of its compressive stroke; and the valve means being so constructed and arranged that they release sequentially.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 88 words
A reusable energy absorbing apparatus comprising: a plurality of air chambers for partially compressing upon the application of an axial impact force; each of the air chambers comprising valve means for sealing the air chamber upon the application of the axial impact force to trap air within the air chamber and for automatically releasing a portion of the air within the air chamber after the air chamber has reached the end of its compressive stroke; and the valve means being so constructed and arranged that they release sequentially.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 30 words
The apparatus of Claim 4 wherein each of the valve means comprises a respective pressure actuated valve and a respective inertially activated valve seat configured to seal against the valve.
