Abstract

Abstract A heating unit suitable for mounting in a cooking hob consists of a circular tray (1) having a layer (2) of thermally-insulative material disposed therein and a peripheral thermally-insulative wall (3), within which four infra-red lamps (4), each containing a tungsten filament (5), are supported. The tray (1) also includes an inner thermally-insulative wall (8), which encloses the length of each filament (5). Between the peipheral and inner walls, two conventional, wire-wound heating elements (9, 10) are disposed. The filaments (4) and the elements (9, 10) are energisable independently and/or concurrently, and series and/or parallel combinations of the filaments (4) and the elements (9, 10) may be switched to provide various discrete power outputs.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 113 words
A heating unit suitable for mounting in a cooking hob, said unit including a base layer (2) of thermally-insulative material, a peripheral thermally-insulative wall (3) to define a first hotplate area of said hob, and one or more infra-red lamps (4) each including a filament (5) emissive of infra-red radiation, characterised in that the or each filament (5) is commensurate with a second hotplate area, located within said first hotplate area and defined by an inner thermally-insulative wall (8), said heating unit also including further heating means (9, 10) commensurate with said first hotplate area, said filament or filaments (5) and said further heating means (9, 10) being energisable independently and concurrently, selectively.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 113 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 46 words
A heating unit as claimed in Claim 1 and including means for switching said filament or filaments (5) and said further heating means (9, 10) into a number of series and/or parallel combinations to provide discrete heat outputs within said first and second hotplate areas, selectively.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
A heating unit as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 wherein said further heating means (9, 10) comprises one or more wire-wound heating elements (9, 10).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
A heating unit as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 wherein said further heating means (9, 10) comprises a further infra-red-emissive filament (16) provided in each lamp (4).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 50 words
A heating unit as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 wherein said further heating means (9, 10) comprises an extended portion (23) of said filament (22) of each lamp (4), said filament (22) being energisable independently of said extended portion (23) by provision of a tapping point ( 1 9).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 21 words
A heating unit as claimed in any preceding claim wherein said inner wall (8) is concentric with said peripheral wall (3).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 38 words
A heating unit as claimed in any preceding claim wherein said further heating means (9, 10) consists of a pre-heating device for providing an increased heat output during an initial warm-up period on operation of said heating unit.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 27 words
A cooking hob including one or more heating units, as claimed in any preceding claim, mounted beneath a glass ceramic plate (19) to form said hotplate areas.
