Abstract
Abstract Apparatus for determining the location of a physical feature, such as a hole (35) in a panel (11), relative to two coordinate axes (X, Y) by optically scanning across the panel and hole from a reference (23, 46) while measuring the distance of the hole from the reference (46) and the length of the hole chord for each of a plurality of scans, then adding half the chord length to the respective distance to the hole edge and averaging the results for the plurality of scans. Scan lines used for the hole edge and chord measurement can be selected from among a plurality of scan lines having a predetermined chord length. The measuring apparatus can also be readily adjusted to accommodate a range of feature dimensions.

Apparatus for determining the center location of a substantially circular contrasting area (35) on an object (11) with respect to a reference (23, 46) comprising: means (13, 14) for imaging said object and said area and having therein means (52-60) for translating said image into a plurality of scan signals from said reference to generate output signals (57, 58) of varying magnitude representative of features of said image; means for generating pulses (52) at a fixed frequency; accumulator means including first means (55, 57) for accumulating said pulses during a first portion of each of said scan signals representative of the distance from said reference to said area, and second means (58) for accumulating said pulses during a second portion of said scan signals representative of the distance across said area; means (53, 54) responsive to said varying output signals for gating said pulses to an appropriate one of said first or second accumulator means; and means (60) for adding the value in said first accumulator means to an appropriate part, particularly half the value in said second accumulator means for each of selected ones of said scan lines.
