Abstract

Abstract Modulated tuning intake systems for multi-cylinder internal combustion engines are described wherein dual plenums (28, 29) are each connected to essentially half the engine cylinders (1-6) and tuned to provide enhanced charging efficiency in a predetermined, normally lower, range of engine speeds. A controlled valved tube (46) is provided between the plenums (28, 29) to effectively modify or eliminate their separate character by joining them at other selected engine speeds, such as the middle and higher speed ranges, thus providing enhanced charging efficiency at these speeds and obtaining improved volumetric cylinder charging efficiency over all, or a major portion, of the engine operating speed range.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 242 words
A modulated tuning intake system (45;55) for an internal combustion engine, having a plurality of cylinders (1-6) each included in one of two cylinder groups (1,3,5;2,4,6), a manifold plenum (28,29) for each group, said plenums being spaced a fixed distance apart, and runners (11-16) connecting each plenum with the cylinders of its respective group, a common chamber (22) for the system, a pair of conduits (30,31), one connecting each manifold plenum with the common chamber (22), each conduit (30,31) and its connected manifold plenum (28,29) forming a separate leg (28,30;29,31) of the intake system, said system being tuned to provide through its separate legs (28,30;29,31) an enhanced level of cylinder charging volume in a predetermined lower range of engine speeds, characterised in that the system includes passage means (46;51;56) spaced from the common chamber and extending between the separate legs (28,30;29,31) of the system (45;55) to internally communicate the manifold plenums (28,29) along paths of length greater than the distance between the plenums (28,29) and less than the combined length of said conduits (30,31) so as to provide an enhanced level of cylinder charging volume in a higher range of engine speeds above said lower range, and valve means (47;52;57) in said passage means (46;51;56) and movable to open or close the communication of said manifold plenums (28,29) through the passage means (46;51;56) and thereby provide either the lower or higher speed range of enhanced cylinder charging for the intake system (45;55).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 242 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 34 words
A modulated tuning intake system according to Claim 1, characterised in that the passage means (46) internally communicates the separate conduits (30,31) at points intermediate the common chamber (22) and the manifold plenums (28,29).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 60 words
A modulated tuning intake system according to Claim 1, characterised in that the passage means (56) is spaced from the common chamber (22) and extends between the manifold plenums (28,29) to internally communicate the manifold plenums (28,29) along said paths of length greater than the distance between the plenums (28,29) and less than the combined length of said conduits (30,31).
