Abstract

Abstract Apparatus is provided for measuring the ratio of first and second impedances such as capacitors (C 1 , C 2 ) of a capacitative transducer. A carrier driver (S i ) supplies an amplitude modulated voltage (Vi) at a constant frequency to the first impedance (C 1 ) and a second driver (S 2 ) supplies a voltage (V 2 ) to the second impedance (C 2 ) that is of opposite polarity to the voltage (V 1 ), is amplitude modulated at the same frequency and is of variable amplitude. A comparator constituted by a summing amplifier (A 1 , C 3 ), a demodulator (S 3 ) and an integrator (A 2 , R 1 , C 4 ) responds to the output of said first and second impedances (C 1 , C 2 ) and supplies an imbalance signal that is a function of (V 1 C 1 - V 2 C 2 ). That signal modifies the output waveform of variable waveform generator (G 2 ) and comparator A3, the output being fed through chopper (S 4 ) and low pass filter (F 1 ) to driver (S 2 ) to provide a variable amplitude signal that is the voltage (V 2 ). The mark/space ratio of the comparator A3 represents the ratio of (C 1 ) to (C 2 ).
