Abstract
Abstract A vena caval catheter (20) has a cage-like tip (40) at the distal end (42); the tip (40) comprises a cylindrical base having upstanding struts (56, 58, 60, 62) attached to the base of a generally conical member (65) whose apex (72) is towards said distal end (42). A tip (40) for a vena caval catheter (20) is also disclosed.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim
62 words
A tip for a vena caval catheter, said tip having a proximal portion (46) for attachment to the distal end of a catheter and a plurality of longitudinally extending struts (56, 58, 60, 62) characterised thereby that the distal ends of said struts are connected to the base of a generally conical member (65) whose apex is pointed towards said proximal portion.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
19 words
A catheter comprising an elongate tube (28) having the tip of Claim 1 attached to the distal end thereof.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
34 words
A catheter according to Claim 2, characterised thereby that the proximal portion (46) of the tip is generally cylindrical and includes a spigot on which the distal end of the tube (28) is located.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
31 words
A catheter according to Claim 3, characterised thereby that the inner diameter of said proximal portion (46) is greater than the outer diameter of the base of said conical member (65).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
31 words
A catheter according to any of Claims 2 to 4, characterised thereby that the apex (72) of said conical member is substantially coincident with the longitudinal axis of said tip (40).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
40 words
A catheter according to any of Claims 2 to 5, characterised thereby that a distal end portion of the tube (38) tapers radially inwardly towards said tip, said end portion having a plurality of openings (86) in the wall thereof.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
35 words
A catheter according to any of Claims 2 to 6, characterised thereby that said proximal portion (46) has an outer diameter substantially equal to the outer diameter of the distal end of said tube (38).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
37 words
A catheter according to Claim 7, characterised thereby that the radially outer and inner surfaces of the struts (56, 58, 60, 62) blend smoothly into the radially outer and inner surfaces respectively of the proximal portion (46).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
29 words
A catheter according to any of Claims 2 to 8, characterised thereby that said conical member (65) is circular in cross-section and has a smoothly rounded apex and base.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
31 words
A catheter according to any of Claims 2 to 9, characterised thereby that each strut (56, 58, 60, 62) has a smoothly contoured outer surface throughout the length of the strut.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
29 words
A catheter according to any of Claims 2 to 10, characterised thereby that the struts (56, 58, 60, 62) blend smoothly into the base of said conical member (65).
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
25 words
A catheter according to any of Claims 2 to 11, characterised thereby that the tip (40) has a smoothly contoured outer distal end surface (66).
