Abstract

Abstract A color quantization system is provided for color image display, which determines a predetermined number of displaying colors for each given frame image in the following manner; (A) calculate a popularity or the number of pels within each sub-space defined on the whole color space (12); (B) select the largest number M of above popularities (22); (C) determine the color representing the sub-space which has the largest popularity, as one of the above displaying colors, if is satisfied, wherein nr is the number of undetermined display color, and N is the number of the pels which are not mapping onto the determined display colors (24); (D) increment the size of the sub-space if is not satisfied (26). nr This color quantization system is effective for eliminating the controuring effect. Furthermore, the algorithm is very simple.

A color quantization system for color image display comprising: means for calculating the number of pels within each sub-space defined on a whole color space; means for selecting the sub-space which has the largest number of pels from sub-spaces other than the sub-spaces represented by the displaying colors which have already been determined; means for determining whether the requirement, M ≧ is satisfied or not, wherein M is said largest number of pels, A is the number of all the pels of a color image to be displayed, B is the number of pels in the sub-spaces represented by the displaying colors which have already been determined, n 1 is the number of all the displaying colors, and n 2 is the number of the displaying colors which have already been deter ined; means for selecting the color representing the sub-space which has the largest number of pels, as one of the displaying colors, when said requirement is satisfied; and means for incrementing the size of the sub-space, when said requirement is not satisfied.
