Abstract

A multilayer, biaxially oriented carrier film for magnetic information carriers is described which is composed of a base layer (A) comprising a thermoplastic polymer matrix of essentially linear aromatic polyester which, in order to improve its surface roughness which determines the sliding properties of the film, has solid particles in finely divided form contains, and from at least one on one of the two surfaces of the base layer (A) applied top layer (B). The characteristic features of the carrier film described can be seen in the fact that the base layer (A) contains the solid particles in an amount of 0.001% by weight to 10% by weight, based on the weight of the polymer forming the base layer (A) , the mean particle size of the solid particles being in the range from 0.3 to 20 .mu.m, that the top layer (B) comprises a thermoplastic polymer matrix of essentially linear, aromatic polyester which, in finely divided form, contains solid particles in an amount of 0 up to 10% by weight, based on the weight of the polymer forming the outer layer (B), are incorporated, the solid particles having an average particle diameter of less than 0.3 / μm, and that the layer thickness of the outer layer (B) is at most 40% of the layer thickness of the base layer (A).
