Abstract

Abstract A casing (10) has a front slot (20) for insertion of a disc in its case (23). The disc case slides into a support (30) spaced above a driving hub and magnetic head (90) on a carriage (91). The support (30) is urged downwardly by springs (37) but is held in the raised position by pins (32, 33) trapped in slots in tongues (50to 53) upstanding from a slider (45). The disc case engages a lever (70) which turns clockwise and engages a lever (61) to turn this also clockwise. The lever (61) disengages from an edge of the slider (45) which moves forwardly under the action of a spring (48) to free the pins (32, 33) and allow the support unit (30) to drop down vertically, guided by the pins (32, 33) in slots (34, 35). The lever (70) may additionally push a cover on the disc case laterally to uncover slots (24) in the disc case. To remove the disc the slider (45) is pushed back by a button (49) and the posts (50 to 53) cam the pins (32, 33) upwardly again, while springs biasing the levers (61 and 70) reset these levers and eject the disc case.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 138 words
Apparatus for writing on and/or reading from magnetic discs which are contained in a protective case, comprising a drive member (86) which is engageable with a disc to rotate it within its case, a magnetic write and/or read head (90), and a support unit (30) for the disc case movable between a first position for disc insertion and removal and a second position in which the disc is in a nominal operating plane, in engagement with the drive member and cooperating with the magnetic head, characterised in that the support unit (30) is spaced from and parallel to the nominal operating plane in the first position and by a mechanism (60) which is actuable by the disc case upon introduction thereof into the support unit (30) for displacing the support unit from the first to the second position.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 138 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 39 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, characterised by means (32, 34; 33,35) for guiding the support unit (30) from the first position to the second position, with the support unit always being held substantially parallel to the nominal operating plane.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 105 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the said mechanism (60) comprises an actuating element (45) which is slidable between a rest position and an operating position in a plane parallel to the nominal operating plane and is provided with stop means (54) co-operable with the support unit (30) to hold it in the first position, a release element (61, 70) which is actuable by the disc case being provided to cause the sliding movement of the actuating element between its rest position and its operating position and to free the stop means from the condition of cooperation with the support unit.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 48 words
Apparatus according to claim 3, characterised in that the actuating element (45) is provided with lifting means (55) co-operable with the support unit to move it from the second position to the first position when the actuating element is displaced from its operating position towards its rest position.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 80 words
Apparatus according to claim 3 or 4, characterised in that the release element comprises a lever (70) disposed in association with the support unit (30) to co-operate with the disc case and movable between a stable position and an unstable position against the force of a resilient element (74), and an intermediate element (61) interposed between the lever and the actuating element (45) to hold the lever in said unstable position when the actuating element is in its operating position.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 60 words
Apparatus according to claim 5, characterised in that the actuating element (45), on moving from its operating position to its rest position, causes disengagement of the intermediate element (61) from the lever (70) and permits the resilient element (74) to move the lever back into its stable position and consequently to expel the disc case from the support unit (30).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 111 words
Apparatus according to any of claims 3 to 6, for use with a disc case which comprises a pair of slots which are radial with respect to the disc contained therein, and a closure element for closing the slots and provided with a pair of slots which are capable of being aligned with the pair of slots in the case to permit the magnetic head (90) to contact the disc, characterised in that the release element (61, 70) co-operates with the closure element to move the slots in the closure element into line with the slots in the case during the operation of inserting the case into the support unit (30).
Claim 9
Independent Claim 59 words
A method of mounting a magnetic head on the carriage or apparatus for writing on and/or reading from magnetic discs characterised in that the carriage is mounted in a predetermined position, the head is adjustably supported and correctly positioned in relation to the carriage as observed by an optical system, and the head is then glued to the carriage.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 59 words
A method of mounting a magnetic head on the carriage or apparatus for writing on and/or reading from magnetic discs characterised in that the carriage is mounted in a predetermined position, the head is adjustably supported and correctly positioned in relation to the carriage as observed by an optical system, and the head is then glued to the carriage.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 31 words
A method according to claim 8, characterised in that the head is held in a vice which is adjustable in position and orientated, in all directions, for positioning the head correctly.
