Abstract

Abstract A laser shielding device comprises two spaced apart layers (30, 31) of shielding material defining a sealed chamber (33) between the two layers. At least one layer will degrade in the presence of an impinging laser beam, creating a hole through the layer. Flow of gas into or from said chamber (33), which may be detected by a pressure switch (42), or which may be detected by a "sniffer", is sensed and signalled to a machine controller to activate an alarm and/or to stop the lasing operation.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 63 words
I. A laser shielding device comprising a screen (29) comprising spaced layers (30, 31) which define a closed chamber (33), one (30), of the layers being capable of being disrupted by a laser beam, and sensing means (42) which is responsive to flow of fluid into or from said chamber in consequence of disruption of said one layer (30) by a laser beam.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 35 words
A device according to Claim I wherein the chamber (33) contains gas at a pressure other than atmospheric pressure, and the sensing means (42) is responsive to a change in pressure in said chamber (33).
Claim 3
Independent Claim 32 words
A device according to Claim I wherein the chamber contains a detectable gas, and the sensing means comprises a detector which is responsive to the presence of the gas outside the chamber.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 20 words
A device according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the sensing means is operative to activate an alarm.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 27 words
A device according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the sensing means is operative to generate an inhibit signal to terminate use of the laser.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 32 words
A device according to any one of the preceding claims comprising a support means (35) whereby the screen may be located at a desired position with respect to a laser working zone.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 52 words
A device according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the first and second layers (30, 31) are substantially flat sheets spaced from one another by a spacing and seating means (32), a flow port (36) extending into the chamber (33) through which fluid may flow into or from the chamber.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 53 words
A device according to any one of the preceding claims when said one shielding layer (30) comprises thermoplastics material capable of absorbing at least a portion of a C0 2 laser beam having a wave length in the range of 9 to I I micrometers and degrading in the presence of said beam.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 124 words
A laser shielding device comprising: (a) a first shielding layer (30) comprising thermoplastic material capable of absorbing at least a portion of a laser beam and degrading in the presence of said beam; (b) a second shielding layer (31); (c) means (32) for spacing said first and second layers from one another and for creating a substantially enclosed chamber (33) between the two layers; (d) a pressure source port (36) in fluid communication with said chamber; (e) a pressure switch (42) for sensing and signalling a pressure change in said chamber (33); (f) a pressure source means (39) for maintaining a pressure level in said chamber (33); (g) means (35) for supporting and positioning said shielding layers with respect to a laser working zone.
