Abstract

Abstract This invention relates to a thermal compensation mechanism for positioning a read/write head relative to a magnetic disk surface in a magnetic disk apparatus using a band drive head actuator. The thermal compensation mechanism for a misposition of the head (3) is incorporated in a band connecting structure which comprises a metal band (11), and spring (12) and (13), and which connects a stepper motor pulley (10) to a head actuator arm (4). In this mechanism, the thermal compensation is accomplished by chosing spring coefficients of the springs (12) and (13) which generate compensatory force due to relative change in length between the band (11) and a spring support (9) which is secured to both ends of band (11) through the springs (12) and (13). One of the springs (12) and (13) may be bimetal.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 193 words
A temperature compensating mechanism for positioning of a magnetic head of a magnetic disk drive that comprises a movable member (4) supporting said magnetic head (3), a pulley (10) for driving said movable member, and a connecting structure including a band (11, 21) connecting said pulley and two spaced points of said movable member and at least one spring (12, 22) exerting tensile force on said band, wherein said temperature compensating mechanism is characterized in that spring coefficient (K BI , K SI ) of one half of said connecting structure for connecting the pulley and either one (inside) of the two points of the movable member and spring coefficient (K BO , K SO ) of the other half (outside) of the connecting structure for connecting the pulley and another point of the movable member are chosen so that displacement (TTS) between the magnetic head and a record track on a magnetic disk (1) caused by temperature change (AT) is compensated by force generated by the connecting structure due to change in length between the two points of the movable member and the connecting structure that is caused by said temperature change.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 193 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 55 words
A mechanism claimed in Claim 1 wherein a linear expansion coefficient (a) for said band is made different from that of an element between said two points of said movable member so that a relative change in length (AS) occurs between said two spaced points (12, 13) of said movable member and said connecting structure.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 84 words
A mechanism claimed in Claim 1 where said springs (12, 13) are positioned between each end of said hand and each of said two points of said movable member, spring coefficient of one half of said connecting structure for connecting the pulley and either one of the two points of the movable member and spring coefficient of the other half of the connecting structure for connecting the pulley and another point of the movable member being chosen by choosing spring coefficients of these springs.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 13 words
A mechanism claimed in Claim 1 wherein said spring (22) is a bimetal.
