Abstract

Abstract Radio frequency conductive substrates comprising, e.g., plates or fibers of carbon or the like and a thin, uniform firmly adherent film deposited by plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition onto the radio frequency excited substrate, and apparatus for their production. Composites comprising the coated substrates and a continuous matrix of a ceramic or an organic polymer are also disclosed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 44 words
A coated substrate comprising a radio frequency conductive core and at least one thin, uniform, firmly adherent, organic film comprising carbon and at least one other non-metal deposited on said core by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition while said core is radio frequency excited.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 44 words
A coated substrate comprising a radio frequency conductive core and at least one thin, uniform, firmly adherent, organic film comprising carbon and at least one other non-metal deposited on said core by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition while said core is radio frequency excited.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 33 words
A coated substrate as defined in Claim 1 wherein said organic film has been deposited on said core at an applied radio frequency power selected to produce a film having a predetermined modulus.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 14 words
A coated substrate as defined in Claim 1 wherein said organic film is functionalized.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 34 words
A coated substrate as defined in Claim 3 wherein said functionalized organic film has been deposited on said core at an applied radio frequency power selected to produce a film having a predetermined modulus.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 47 words
A coated substrate as defined in Claim 2 wherein the applied radio frequency power is within the range of from about 10 to about 1000 watts, and the modulus of the film is in the range of from about 300,000 to about 30,000,000 pounds per square inch.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 47 words
A coated substrate as defined in Claim 4 wherein the applied radio frequency power is within the range of from about 10 to about 1000 watts, and the modulus of the film is in the range of from about 300,000 to about 30,000,000 pounds per square inch.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 30 words
A coated substrate as defined in Claim 1 wherein the film is deposited on said core at a vapor pressure not substantially in excess of about 5,000 microns of mercury.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 33 words
A coated substrate as defined in Claim 7 wherein the film is deposited on said core at a vapor pressure in the range of from about 20 to about 500 microns of mercury.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 26 words
A coated substrate as defined in Claim 1 wherein the thickness of the film is in the range of from about 50 to about 10,000 Angstroms.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 26 words
A coated substrate as defined in Claim 9 wherein the thickness of the film is in the range of from about 200 to about 5,000 Angstroms.
