Abstract

Abstract The conductors (2, 3,4) of multi-conductor, medium voltage, power cables, at locations where the cable insulation has been removed, are insulated by positioning between the conductors or cores, an insert (1), at least the surface of which comprises a first void-filling material (7) capable of forming a substantially void-free interface with each conductor, placing a second void-filling material (8, 9, 10) over the conductors and recovering a dimensionally recoverable polymeric sleeve (11) over the resulting assembly.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 84 words
A method of insulating the conductors of a multi-conductor, medium voltage power cable, at a location where the cable insulation is removed, said method comprising: positioning between the conductors (2,3,4) an insert (1) shaped such that it lies between each of the conductors, at least the surface of said insert (1) comprising a first void-filling material (7) capable of forming a void-free interface with each conductor; positioning a dimensionally recoverable polymeric sleeve (11) over the resulting assembly; and causing the sleeve (11) to recover.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 84 words
A method of insulating the conductors of a multi-conductor, medium voltage power cable, at a location where the cable insulation is removed, said method comprising: positioning between the conductors (2,3,4) an insert (1) shaped such that it lies between each of the conductors, at least the surface of said insert (1) comprising a first void-filling material (7) capable of forming a void-free interface with each conductor; positioning a dimensionally recoverable polymeric sleeve (11) over the resulting assembly; and causing the sleeve (11) to recover.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method in accordance with Claim 1, comprising the step of positioning the second void-filling material around the conductors (8,9,10).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
A method in accordance with Claim 2, wherein the second void-filling material is positioned by placing the void filling material over the conductors (2,3,4) in the form of shaped profiles (8,9,10).
Claim 5
Independent Claim 32 words
A method in accordance with any preceding Claim, wherein the dimensionally recoverable sleeve (11) is heat shrinkable and the step of causing the sleeve to recover comprises applying heat to the sleeve.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method in accordance with Claim 4, wherein the heat shrinkable sleeve (11) comprises an inner elastomeric layer (12) and an outer conductive layer (13).
Claim 7
Independent Claim 21 words
A method in accordance with any preceding Claim, comprising applying a stress grading material (24,25) to areas of high electrical stress.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 25 words
A method in accordance with any preceding Claim, comprising applying an initial insulating layer (20,21,22) around connectors connecting the conductors and around adjacent conductor regions.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 31 words
A method in accordance with Claim 7, in which the initial insulating layer is applied by positioning a dimensionally recoverable sleeve (20,21,22) over each connector and causing the sleeve to recover.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 21 words
A method in accordance with any preceding Claim, which further comprises positioning a liner (27) over the recovered polymeric sleeve (11).
Claim 11
Independent Claim 20 words
A method in accordance with any preceding Claim, which further comprises applying an outer protective jacket (29) over the joint.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 54 words
A method according to any preceding claim, wherein each of said cables has at least three conductors each surrounded by a dielectric layer a portion of which has been removed to expose an end region of the conductor, the conductors of one cable being connected to the corresponding conductors of a second such cable.
