Abstract
Abstract A polarized ribbon cable connector which facilitates the placement of electrical or circuit components therein is taught. Briefly stated, a housing lower assembly (126) is profiled (146) to receive a carrier strip (124) therein. The carrier strip has bent-up portions (130. 132) which provide for insulation displacement connection with electrical wires. An intermediate assembly (112) is disposed on top of the carrier strip with a channel (114) therein to receive a ribbon cable (104). A housing top assembly (90) is disposed on top of the ribbon cable and has latches (92) which mate with tabs (128) contained on the lower assembly thereby interlocking the components together. The carrier strip also has contact legs (143) disposed therein which allow for electrical contact to be made with pads (102) contained in an insertable logic package (100). Knockout pin apertures (144) disposed in the lower assembly allow portions of the carrier strip to be electrically isolated from the contact legs. Additionally, response/command pin apertures (140) are also disposed in the lower assembly which thereby allow respond/command plugs (150) having pins (160) therein to mate with the lower assembly whereby the pins contained in the plugs contact different portions of the carrier strip.

A cable connector having a housing top assembly (90) having a profiled area (98) to receive an electrical cable and having at least two latch members (92) attached thereto, an electrical cable (104) having a plurality of wires (106, 108) therein disposed adjacent to the profiled area, a housing intermediate assembly (112) adjacent the top assembly (90) and having a cable receiving channel (114) therein, the channel in opposing relationship to the profiled area (98) in the top assembly (90), wherein the intermediate assembly (112) has contact receiving apertures (116) therethrough, a logic package (100) having electrical components contained therein and conductive pads (102) disposed on the outside thereof wherein the pads are electrically connected to the components, and a housing lower assembly (126) having retaining tabs (128) cooperable with the latch members contained on the top assembly thereby fixedly holding the upper, intermediate and lower assemblies together, thereby forming an active connector assembly (52), characterised in that: a connector carrier strip (124) is disposed adjacent to the intermediate assembly (112), wherein the strip has a plurality of terminals (130, 132) bent up from the plane defined by the strip, the terminals cooperating with the apertures (116) in the intermediate assembly (112) and extending therethrough so as to have each of the terminals engage a wire in the cable, further characterised in that a plurality of contact legs (143) are bent down from the plane defined by the strip, the legs facilitating electrical communication with the package and being further characterised in that pin apertures (140) are disposed in the strip which allow for electrically conductive pins (160) to be disposed therethrough and thereby in electrical communication with the logic package (100) and/or the wires (106, 108) in the cable and the housing lower assembly (126) adjacent to the strip has a lower assembly aperture (145) therein profiled to receive the contact legs and the logic package, the lower assembly having lower assembly pin apertures (147) therethrough which are aligned and cooperate with the pin apertures in the strip and the electrically conductive pins.
