Abstract

Abstract In a transistor inverter with series-connected transistors adapted to conduct alternately, means are provided to sense when one of the two is conducting and to inhibit the turning on of the other transistor during that period. The "on" condition is detected by sensing the collector-emitter voltage of the transistor involved, and for responsively energizing an optical transmitter to provide a signal back to the main controller for use in inhibiting the turning on of the other transistor.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 89 words
A shoot-thru protection circuit for an inverter having upper and lower transistors arranged in a bridge network to be alternately turned on and off to provide alternate diagonal current flow through the primary of a high-voltage transformer to provide power to an X-ray tube comprising: (a) means for sensing the collector-emitter voltage on one of said upper and lower transistors to determine when said one is conducting; and (b) means for inhibiting the other of said upper and lower transistors from turning on when said one transistor is on.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 89 words
A shoot-thru protection circuit for an inverter having upper and lower transistors arranged in a bridge network to be alternately turned on and off to provide alternate diagonal current flow through the primary of a high-voltage transformer to provide power to an X-ray tube comprising: (a) means for sensing the collector-emitter voltage on one of said upper and lower transistors to determine when said one is conducting; and (b) means for inhibiting the other of said upper and lower transistors from turning on when said one transistor is on.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 40 words
A shoot-thru protection circuit as set forth in Claim 1 wherein said sensing means comprises an optical transmitter and a diode connected in series between a voltage reference and the collector of said one of said upper and lower transistors.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 21 words
A shoot-thru protection circuit as set forth in Claim 2 wherein said diode has its cathode connected to said transistor collector.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 81 words
A shoot-thru protection circuit as set forth in Claim 1 wherein said sensing and inhibiting means include: (a) an optical transmitter and a diode connected in series between a voltage reference and the collector of said one transistor; (b) means for conducting the output of said optical transmitter to a microprocessor when current flows through said optical transmitter; and (c) means for inhibiting the turning on of the other of said transistors when there is an output from said optical transmitter.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 104 words
S. A protection circuit for preventing a shoot-thru condition in a power inverter having at least a pair of transistors connected in series, with a transformer primary connected to the emitter of one transistor and to the collector of the other transistor, and having a control circuit for alternately turning the transistors on for the conduct of current through the transformer primary in alternate directions comprising: (a) means for sensing the collector-emitter voltage on one of said series-connected transistors to determine when it is conducting; (b) means for inhibiting the other of said series-connected transistors from turning on when said one transistor is conducting.
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 49 words
A protection circuit as set fort in Claim 5 wherein said sensing means comprises a diode and an optical transmitter connected in series between a positive voltage source and the collector of said one transistor, with said optical transmitter adapted to conduct only when said one transistor is conducting.
