Abstract

Abstract Phenolic resin foams are prepared by preparing a mixture having a pH of greater than 7 from a phenolic resol, and alkali and a lactone, an ester or a cyclic aliphatic carbonate for curing the phenolic resols under alkaline conditions, foaming this mixture either by introducing air or incorporating a readily volatile liquid blowing agent, and allowing the foam to cure. The foams which form in this process are fire-resistant insulating materials which are particularly suitable for in-situ use.
