A process for the preparation of a compound according to Claim 1 in which Z 1 and Z 2 are both - 0 - and q = 1 which comprises reacting a 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran of the formula: with a mandelic acid of the formula: in which X 1 , X 2 , R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , A, B, and Y have the same meaning as in Claim 1 and Q is H or a group of the formula: wherein T is OH or Z and V, W, Z and p have the same meaning as in Claim 1, oxidising the product to give a 3,7-diphenyl-2,6-dioxo-2,6-dihydrobenzodifuran (DDBDD) and, where Q is H reacting the DDBDD with a compound U - Y and where T is OH reacting the DDBDD with a compound R 6 OH or HNR 6 R 7 .
