Abstract

The scanning ophthalmoscope comprises, for the illumination of the eye, a block forming a light source A, followed by a forward refraction compensator B a , then by a scanning sub-assembly C, and finally a catoptric ophthalmoscope proper D. These last two elements are common for the outward journey and the return journey. On return, after crossing the partial reflection plate L 1 , the observation beam passes through another refraction compensator B r , followed by the detector device E, and by an electronic processing circuit F. A great symmetry of the processing beam is maintained between the outward and the return path. The optics of the subset D essentially consists of a spherical mirror M 1 . The scanning mirrors M 3 and M 4 pivot around respective axes of rotation collinear with the focal points of astigmatism that the spherical mirror would produce on the image of a punctual patient pupil.
