Abstract

A method for detecting the failure of one or more transmission channels in a redundantly designed optical transmission system is described, in which the redundant transmission channels (I 1 , 1 2 ) on a receiver (E III ) are fed to a failure detection circuit which compares to runtime differences in the redundant channels is not critical and which generates a signal when a transmission channel has failed. A specific embodiment of such a failure detection circuit for two redundant transmission channels is specified. It is constructed with a few logical links and not only reliably detects the failure of a channel, but also shows which channel has failed.
