Abstract
Abstract Surgical fastener applying apparatus including an actuator and a removable surgical fastener containing cartridge. The cartridge fits loosely into a cartridge holder part of the actuator which translates linearly toward or away from an anvil part of the actuator. As the cartridge holder translates toward the anvil, the cartridge is automatically brought into alignment and registration with the anvil.

Surgical fastener applying apparatus comprising: a frame (20) having a U-shaped distal portion (30); anvil means (110) disposed on the distal leg (32) of the U; cartridge holder means 160) disposed in the U for linear reciprocal motion toward and away from the anvil means (110); cartridge means (200) removably insertable in the cartridge holder means (60) along an axis transverse to the axis of reciprocation of the cartridge holder means when the cartridge holder means is reciprocated away from the anvil means (110); and cartridge registration means (24, 228, 52, 218) associated with the cartridge holder means (60) and the cartridge means (200) for urging the cartridge means into registration with the anvil means (110) as the cartridge holder means reciprocates toward the anvil means provided that the cartridge means (200) is inserted at least a predetermined distance into the cartridge holder means (60) prior to reciprocation of the cartridge holder means (60) toward the anvil means (110).

The apparatus defined in claim 1 wherein the cartridge registration means comprises: cam surface means (52) associated with one of the cartridge holder means (60) and the cartridge means (200) and including a portion which is transverse to the distal leg of the U; and cam follower means (222) associated with the other of the cartridge holder means..(60) and the cartridge means (200) for contacting the cam surface means (52) when the cartridge holder means is reciprocated toward the anvil means (110) provided that the cartridge means is inserted at least a predetermined distance into the cartridge holder means prior to reciprocation of the cartridge holder means (60) toward the anvil means (110).

The apparatus defined in claim 2 wherein the cartridge registration means includes second cam surface means (28) associated with the frame (20) and second cam follower means (228) associated with the cartridge means (200) for contacting the second cam surface means (28) when the cartridge holder means (60) is reciprocated toward the anvil means (110), the second cam surface means (28) and the second cam follower means (228) forcing the cam follower means into contact with the portion (24) of cam surface means which is transverse to the distal leg (32) of the U.
