Abstract

Anti-decubitus air mattresses are known, but they have the disadvantage that they have to be pumped hard so that the patient's body does not press on the hard surface. The invention provides a patient support in the form of an air mattress on which the patient floats softly, similarly to water, but without pressing through the hard bed mattress at any part of the body. This effect is achieved by dividing the entire patient pad into transverse, independent soft air cushions. As a result, the patient's body hangs in a flotation position. The contact surface is greatly increased and the contact pressure is greatly reduced. Accentuated pressure points are also avoided because the cushioning air is displaced by particularly heavy and bony parts of the body and is not compressed. The invention achieves these advantages without the use of alternating pressure devices.
