Abstract
Abstract A shaped refractory unit such as a high temperature hydrocarbon steam reforming catalyst support is made by extruding a composition comprising refractory oxidix material and hydrophilic polymers of two types differing in their tendency to shear-thinnings, then calcining the extrudate. Use of such polymers makes it possible to extrude clay-free compositions and thus to produce silica-free shaped units.

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim
88 words
A method of making a shaped refractory unit which comprises extruding a composition comprising at least one powdered refractory oxidic material or compound thermally decomposable or reactable thereto, water, at least one hydrophilic polymer (A) which is subject to shear-thinning but is not strongly if at all self-adhesive, and at least one hydrophilic polymer (B) which is strongly self adhesive and may or may not be subject to shear-thinning, then calcining the extrudate to burn out the polymers, bond the refractory material together and adjust its micromeritic properties.
Claim 2
