Abstract

Abstract A read and/or write apparatus for ID cards, includes a magnetic read head (30) for reading at least a magnetic stripe and a magnetic write head (26) are disposed on a running passage for ID cards to be used for an automatic teller system, a credit card system or other various maintenance systems. A connecting member (34) to be connected to a set of connecting terminals (38) of an integrated circuit (36) built into an ID card is arranged, so that read and/or write can be effected on three kinds of ID cards, that is, an ID card having only a magnetic stripe, and ID card having both a magnetic stripe and an integrated circuit built therein and an ID card having only an integrated circuit.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 130 words
A read and write apparatus for ID cards wherein a magnetic read head (30) for reading at least a magnetic stripe and a magnetic write head (26) are disposed on a running passage for ID cards and a connecting member (34) to be connected to a set of connecting terminals of at least an integrated circuit built in an I D card, so that reading and writing can be effected on three kinds of ID cards, that is, an ID card having at least a magnetic stripe, (Fig. 2C) an I D card having at least a magnetic stripe and having at least an integrated circuit built therein, (Fig 2A) and an I D card having at least an integrated circuit built therein and having no magnetic stripe (Fig. 2B).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 130 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 101 words
A read and write apparatus for ID cards according to claim 1, wherein the magnetic write head (26), the magnetic read head (30) and the connecting member (34) for the integrated circuit are disposed on the running passage for ID cards, the magnetic write head is connected to a control unit (46) through a writing driver (28), the magnetic read head (30) is connected to the control unit (46) through a reading amplifier (32), and the connecting member (34) for the integrated circuit is connected to the control unit (46) through a read and/or write circuit (40) for the integrated circuit.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 128 words
Apparatus for reading ID cards (10) for reading cards which include a magnetic stripe (48) and/or an integrated circuit (36), the apparatus comprising a passage along which the card is fed, characterised in that magnetic reading and writing devices (30,26) for co-operating with magnetic stripes (48) on ID cards (10) and means (34) for connecting to an IC (36) on a card (10) for the purposes of reading and writing information thereto are provided in said passage, and in that means (46) are connected to the output of the magnetic reading device (30) to detect whether there is a usable output therefrom when a card (10) has been fed into the passage and, if not, controls the feeding of the card (10) to the IC connecting means (34).
