Abstract

Abstract A dental implant device has a root structure (10) made of a biocompatible, mechanically suitable prosthetic material, a cervical segment (18) projecting above the root structure. made of a biocompatible, nonporous material and having smooth surfaces and together with the root structure forming a member; and a gingival interface (22) made of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene having a porous structureforthe ingrowth of connective tissue, located adjacent to the juncture of the root structure (10) and the cervical segment (18) attached to the member and forming a border around the apical end of the cervical segment. The expanded polytetrafluoroethylene provides for an interlocking between the gingival tissue and the pergingival portion of the dental implant preventing bacterial penetration and infection where the implant extends into the oral cavity.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 109 words
A dental implant device comprising a root structure made of a biocompatible, mechanically suitable prosthetic material and a cervical segment connected to and projecting above said root structure, said cervical segment made of a biocompatible, nonporous material and extending above the gingival epithelial tissue and having smooth surfaces, said root structure and said cervical segment forming a member; characterised by a gingival interface of expanded polytetrafuoroethylene having a porous structure for the ingrowth of connective tissue, said gingival interface attached to said member and located adjacent to the juncture of said root structure and said cervical segment and forming a border around the apical end of said cervical segment.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 109 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 34 words
A dental implant according to claim 1, characterised in that said expanded polytetrafluoroethylene gingival interface has an average fibril length greater than about 60 microns and a density of less than about 1 g/cc.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 41 words
A dental implant according to claim 1, characterised in that said expanded polytetrafluoroethylene gingival interface is a circular disc attached to and surrounding the junction of said root structure and said cervical segment at the apical end of said cervical segment.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 41 words
A dental implant according to claim 1, characterised in that said expanded polytetrafluoroethylene gingival interface is a concentric cylinder attached to and surrounding the junction of said root structure and said cervical segment at the apical end of said cervical segment.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 55 words
A dental implant according to claim 1, characterised in that said cervical segment is formed from a material which penetrates the porous structure of said expanded polytetrafluoroethylene gingival interface and adheres said expanded polytetrafluoroethylene gingival interface to the junction of said root structure and said cervical segment at the apical end of said cervical segment.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 33 words
A dental implant according to claim 1, characterised in that said cervical segment's perimeter is continuously curved and its cross section decreases apically, with the apical end contacting said expanded polytetrafluoroethylene gingival interface.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 31 words
A dental implant according to claim 1, characterised in that said root structure is a solid cylinder with a rounded apical end, or is a hollow cylinder, or is a blade.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 49 words
A dental implant according to claim 2, characterised in that said expanded polytetrafluoroethylene gingival interface has a methanol bubble point of less than about 3.5 psi (24.2kPa) and a density less than about 0.6 g/cc and a majority of nodes passing through the wall thickness of said expanded polytetrafluoroethylene.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 17 words
A dental implant according to claim 7, characterised in that said root structure has a porous surface.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 19 words
A dental implant according to claim 7, characterised in that said root structure contains apertures to promote bony ingrowth.
Claim 12
