Abstract

Abstract Deterioration in properties of reaction injection moulded (RIM) elastomers, arising from lack of adhesion between fillers and elastomers obtained by reacting an aromatic polyisocyanate, a high molecular weight active-hydrogen compound, and a chain extender, can be overcome by using epoxy-modified filler materials, such as epoxy-modified milled glass, flaked glass, mica or Wollastonite.

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 45 words
A method for making a RIM elastomer article by reacting, in a closed mould, an aromatic polyisocyanate, a high molecular weight compound having Zerewitinov-active hydrogen atoms, and a chain extender, in the presence of a filler, characterized in that the filler is an epoxy-modified filler.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 45 words
A method for making a RIM elastomer article by reacting, in a closed mould, an aromatic polyisocyanate, a high molecular weight compound having Zerewitinov-active hydrogen atoms, and a chain extender, in the presence of a filler, characterized in that the filler is an epoxy-modified filler.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 41 words
A method according to claim 1 characterized in that the active hydrogen compound is an amine-terminated polyether having an average molecular weight of greater than 1,500 and having more than 50% of its active hydrogen in the form of amine hydrogens.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 21 words
A method according to claim 2 characterized in that the amine-terminated polyether has an average molecular weight of at least 2,500.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method according to claim 2 or 3 characterized in that the amine terminated polyether has a functionality from 2 to 3.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 31 words
A method according to any one of claims 2 to 4 characterized in that the amine-terminated polyether is an aminated polyoxypropylene triol having an average molecular weight of at least 5,000.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method according to claim 1 characterized in that the active hydrogen compound is a polyether polyol having an equivalent weight of at least 500.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 18 words
A method according to any preceding claim characterized in that the epoxy modified filler material is glass based.
