Abstract
Abstract A catheter cube (12) is made of soft, flexible material and is formed with closed end (18). A valve (10) formed by a single slit through the tubing wall is of such length that the valve will open only upon application of predetermined pressure differentials. A removable stiffener member (16) is positioned within the catheter and abutting the closed end to push the catheter into a body vessel when inserting.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim
92 words
I. A closed ended tubular catheter of a resilient, flexible material of less than 100 durometer hardness, and a two-way valve in the wall of said catheter, the valve consisting of a single, normally closed,. linearly extending slit extending through the catheter wall, the slit having such length that, when predetermined pressure differentials within and without the catheter exist, the catheter wall contiguous the slit deforms and causes the opposed faces of the slit to withdraw from one another and form a temporary orifice through which fluid may be infused or withdrawn.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
22 words
A catheter according to Claim I, wherein the said material is formed of silicon rubber having a durometer of less than 100.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
19 words
A catheter according to Claim I wherein the said material is silicon rubber having a durometer of about 59.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
45 words
A catheter according to any one of the Claims I to 3, wherein the valve area and contiguous catheter wall have been treated with dimethylsiloxane so as to weaken and make more pliable the treated catheter wall in order to facilitate the two-way valve function.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
52 words
A catheter according to Claim 3, wherein the catheter has an outer diamter of 0.089 inch (0.226cm), an inner diameter of 0.052 inch (0.132cm), the slit has a length of 0.250 inch (0.635cm) and the valve faces and catheter wall surrounding the valve have been immersed in dimethylsiloxane for about five minutes
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
154 words
A catheter for insertion into a blood vessel of a patient, comprising: a resilient, closed ended tube formed of a resilient material having a durometer of less than 100 and having a single linearly extending slit through a side wall thereof, such slit having a length such that when predetermined pressure differentials exist within and without the catheter the said side wall deforms inwardly or outwardly such that the opposing valve surfaces are not in complete contact so as to allow fluid to be infused through or drawn out of the catheter through the slit; and a flexible wire-like member positioned in said catheter and abutting said closed end, the member having sufficient stiffness whereby applying a pushing force to said wire-like member will cause it to push against the closed end of the catheter thereby causing the catheter to be drawn into and advance through the blood vessel into which it is inserted.
