Abstract
Abstract The monitoring arrangement is used with a spark ignition system (10,13) in which the spark discharge current oscillates at a known frequency, and includes a sonic sensor (30) accoustically coupled to the spark igniter (13), a detector circuit (33, 35, 37, 38) responsive only to signals from the sensor (30) which have a frequency substantially equal to that of the spark discharge current, and an indicating device (43) responsive to an output signal from the detector circuit (33, 35, 37, 38).

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim
80 words
An arrangement for monitoring operation of a spark ignition system in which the spark discharge current oscillates at a known frequency, said arrangement being characterised by a sonic transducer (30) for acoustic coupling to a spark igniter (13) in said system, a detecting circuit (33, 35, 37, 38) responsive to a signal from said transducer (30) at a frequency substantially equal to that of said discharge current, and an indicating devi.ce (43) responsive to a signal from said detecting circuit.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
43 words
An arrangement as claimed in claim 1 in which said detecting circuit includes a bandpass filter (33) for providing output signals in response only to signals from said transducer (30) which are within a frequency range corresponding to that of said discharge current.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
55 words
An arrangement as claimed in claim 2 in which said detecting circuit further comprises a first timing device (37, 38) responsive to repeated output signals from said filter (33), for generating energising signals for said indicating device (43), said energising signals having durations longer than the repetition period of the signals from said filter (33).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
61 words
An arrangement as claimed in claim 3 which includes a circuit (45, 46) for providing a first indicating signal when an energising voltage is applied to said spark ignition system, and a gate (36) for providing a signal to said timing device (37, 38) only in the presence of said first indicating signal and of a signal from said filter (33).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
69 words
An arrangement as claimed in claim 3 or claim 4 which includes an optical device (51 or 62) for producing a second indicating signal in response to operation of a discharge device (19) in said ignition system, and means (36 or 66) for causing said indicating device (41) to be energised only in the presence of said second indicating signal and of an output signal from said filter (33).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
19 words
An arrangement as claimed in claim 5 in which said second indicating signal is applied to said gate (36).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
78 words
An arrangement as claimed in claim 5 which includes a second timing device (65) responsive to signals from said optical device (62), for causing said second indicating signals to have durations which are longer than the repetition period of the signals from said filter (33), and a further gate (66) for providing an energising signal for said indicating device (43) only in the presence of output signals from said first and second timing devices (37, 38 and 65).
