Abstract
Abstract A process for preparing shaped objects of continuous fiber strand material in a poly(arylene sulfide) matrix and the shaped objects prepared thereby. The shaped objects are prepared by a pultrusion process requiring adaptation of polymer slurry contacting with fiber strands and specifically adapted die apparatus suitable for use with viscous poly(arylene sulfide).

Claim 1
Independent Claim
131 words
A process for preparing shaped objects said process comprising: (a) contacting at least one fiber strand of continuous filaments with poly(arylene sulfide) to produce an impregnated strand having from 20 to 50 weight percent poly (arylene sulfide) content and from 80 to 50 weight percent fiber content; (b) pulling said impregnated strand through an elongated die in which the entrance cross-section is larger than the exit cross-section, the temperature in the entrance region being above the melting point of said poly (arylene sulfide) and the temperature in the exit region such as to maintain at least a portion of said poly(arylene sulfide) in the molten state, to obtain a formed composite comprising at least one impregnated strand; and .(c) cooling said formed composite below the melting point of said poly(arylene sulfide).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
24 words
The process of claim 1 characterized in that said poly (arylene sulfide) contacted with said fiber strand is in the form of a powder.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
32 words
The process of claim 1 characterized in that said poly (arylene sulfide) is in the form of a slurry in a liquid diluent; in particular wherein said slurry also contains processing aids.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
34 words
The process of claim 2 or 3 characterized in that the particle size of said poly(arylene sulfide) in said powder or in said slurry is in the range of from 10 to 15 micrometer.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
45 words
The process of claim 3 or 4 characterized in that said fiber strand contacted with said slurry is subjected to removal of slurry diluent liquid before entering said die; in particular wherein said diluent is removed by pulling said impregnated strand through a heating zone.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
86 words
The process of any of claims 3 to 5 characterized in that said fiber strand is glass fiber and the dilution of said poly(arylene sulfide) slurry is maintained to produce an impregnated strand with a poly(arylene sulfide) content in the range of from 20 to 40 weight percent; or wherein said fiber strand is carbon fiber and the dilution of said poly(arylene sulfide) slurry is maintained to produce an impregnated strand with a poly(arylene sulfide) content in the range of from 25 to 45 weight percent.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
37 words
The process of any of claims 3 to 6 characterized in that said at least one strand is separated in single filaments and/or bundles of filaments by contact of said strand with a stream of gaseous fluid.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
78 words
The process of any of the preceding claims characterized in that said elongated die has at least a portion of sidewall shaped to provide a curved surface or multiple straight surfaces of different taper and said poly(arylene sulfide) has a melt flow greater than 100 grams/10 min; or wherein said elongated die has continuous straight side walls and a constant taper and said poly(arylene sulfide) has a melt flow in the range from 1 to 20000 grams/10 min.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
