Abstract

Abstract A transmitter/receiver unit for use in a two way electrical power supply line carrier communication system. The unit includes two conductors (3, 5) for connection to the supply line, and a transmitter (1) and a receiver (7) each connected across the two conductors. A first winding (9) of a transformer is connected in series between the transmitter (1) and receiver (7) on one of the conductors (3). Switching means (13, 15, 21) is provided which is operable to control the impedance across a second winding (11) of the transformer so that the first winding (9) presents a relatively high impedance to carrier signals when the receiver (7) is operating, and a relatively low impedance to carrier signals when the transmitter is operating.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 120 words
A transmitter/receiver unit for use in a two way electrical power supply line carrier communication system said unit comprising two conductors (3, 5) for connection to said line and a transmitter (1) and a receiver (7) each connected across said two conductors said unit being characterised in that said unit includes: a transformer having a first winding (9) connected in series with said transmitter (1) across said conductors; and switching means (13, 15, 21) operable to control the impedance across a second winding (11) of said transformer so that the first winding (9) presents a relatively high impedance to carrier signals when the receiver (7) is operating, and a relatively low impedance to carrier signals when the transmitter is operating.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 120 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
A transmitter/receiver unit according to Claim 1 in which said switching means (13, 15, 21) is a transistor switching arrangement.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 52 words
A transmitter/receiver unit according to Claim 2 in which said switching means comprises two transistors (13, 15) each having its main current path connected between a respective end of said second winding (11) and one of said conductors (15), and said second winding (11) is centre tapped to said one conductor (5).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 19 words
A transmitter/receiver unit according to any one of the preceding claims in which said transformer has a ferrite core.
