Polyquaternary ammonium compounds and cosmetic compositions containing them

Claim 2

Polyquaternary ammonium compounds of the formula: wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, propyl, -CH 2 CH 2 0H, -CH 2 CH(OH)CH 3 and -CH 2 CH 2 (OCH 2 CH 2 )pOH wherein p is 0 or an integer from 1 to 6, with the proviso that not all of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen; n is at least one, m is an integer from 4 to 34; X is halogen; Z is halogen or amino-diamido ammonium residue of the formula and A is ―CH 2 CH 2 ―O―CH 2 CH 2 ― or (CH 2 ) 6 ― said compound having a weight average molecular weight of about 52,000.

Claim 3

Compound according to claim 1, wherein the ratio of the weight average molecular weight to the number average molecular weight is about 1.1.

Claim 4

A compound according to either of the preceding claims, wherein m is 4 or 7.

Claim 5

A cosmetic composition which comprises a suitable cosmetic carrier and a quaternary ammonium compound of the formula: wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, propyl, -CH 2 CH 2 0H, -CH 2 CH(OH)CH 3 and -CH 2 CH 2 (OCH 2 CH 2 )pOH wherein p is 0 or an integer from 1 to 6, with the proviso that not all of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen; n is at least one; m is an integer from 4 to 34; X is halogen; Z is halogen or amino-diamido ammonium residue of the formula and A is -CH2CH2-OCH2CH2- or (CH 2 ) 6 - wherein said quaternary compound has a weight average molecular weight of about 52,000.

Claim 6

A cosmetic composition which comprises a suitable cosmetic carrier and a quaternary ammonium compound of the formula: wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, propyl, -CH 2 CH 2 0H, -CH 2 CH(OH)CH 3 and -CH 2 CH 2 (OCH 2 CH 2 )pOH wherein p is 0 or an integer from 1 to 6, with the proviso that not all of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen; n is at least one; m is an integer from 4 to 34; X is halogen; Z is halogen or amino-diamido ammonium residue of the formula and A is -CH2CH2-OCH2CH2- or (CH 2 ) 6 - wherein said quaternary compound has a weight average molecular weight of about 52,000.

Claim 7

A composition according to claim 4 wherein said quaternary compound has a ratio of weight average molecular weight to number average molecular weight of about 1.1.

Claim 8

A composition according to either of claims 4 and 5, wherein m is 4 or 7.

Claim 9

A composition according to any one of claims 4 to 6, wherein the cosmetic carrier is one for use in hair formulations.

Claim 10

A composition according to claim 7, wherein the hair formulation is a shampoo.

Claim 11

A composition according to any one of claims 4 to 7, wherein the cosmetic carrier is one for use in skin care products.

Claim 12

A composition according to claim 9, wherein the skin care product is a soap.
