Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 289 words
A travel guidance system for vehicles including: a heading sensor (2) for detecting a direction of movement of a vehicle; a distance sensor (3) for detecting a distance travelled by said vehicle; a map data storage medium (4) preliminarily storing map data; a control unit (5) for receiving a heading signal from said heading sensor (2) and a distance signal from said distance sensor (3) and including a computer (51) to successively compute a present position of said vehicle and for generating video signals corresponding to display data including map data from said map data storage medium (4) and data of said present position; and a display (6) responsive to said video signals from said control unit (5) for displaying a map and a present position mark (61), characterized by said map data storage medium (4) comprising means for preliminarily storing name data (41) of geographical areas and landmark data (42); the computer (51) being capable of determining the landmark (63) closest to said present position (62); said control unit (5) comprising display control means for: (a) causing the position of said landmark (63) to be displayed on said map and (b) retrieving a landmark message (64) concerning said landmark (63) from said storage medium (4) to cause said display (6) to display said landmark message (64) on said display (6); the display control means (52) being provided for retrieving the name of a geographical area (62) to which said present position (61) belongs from said storage medium (4) and causing said display (6) to display a name message (62) on said display (6); and selection means (16-19) for selectively actuating the display control means (52) to display at least one of said landmark data and said name data.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 289 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 62 words
A travel guidance system as claimed in claim 1, further characterized in that said map data storage medium (4) includes a read-only memory having data format consisting of a header area (41) to indentify a geographical area a spot information area (42) storing landmark information, a route information area (43) storing route information, and a service information area (44) storing services information.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 193 words
A travel guidance system as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, further characterized in that said control unit (5) includes: first means responsive to depression of a set key (110) for providing to said display (6) a first display signal indicative of a name of a geographical area displayed within a first specified screen area of said display (6), said name being selected by a cursor key (16, 18); second means responsive to the depression of the set key (110) for providing to said display (6) a second display signal indicative of a city name belonging to said selected name of a geographical area provided by said first means and displayed within a second specifed screen area of said display (6), said city name being selected by the cursor key (16-18); and third means responsive to the depression of the set key (110) for providing to said display (6) a third display signal indicative of a landmark name belonging to said selected city name provided by said second means and displayed within a third specifed screen area of said display (6), said landmark name being selected by the cursor key (16, 18).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 75 words
A travel guidance system as claimed in any preceding claim further characterized in that said storage medium (4) stores a plurality of primary division names, said primary division names being indicative of administative divisions obtained by dividing said map into a plurality of wide divisions, and a plurality of secondary division names, said secondary division names being indicative of administrative divisions obtained by dividing each of the primary divisions into a plurality of smaller divisions.
