Method of controlling the access to a TDM communication channel
Abstract
A frame frequency of 8 kHz with a fixed allocation of the channels in the frame is expedient for transmission of call data in time division multiplex, while such a fixed allocation is very unfavorable for the transmission of data packets. According to the invention, the frame is therefore divided into several groups, each with the same number of words, and each group either contains only narrowband channels for call data transmission or belongs to the high-speed channel. Each group is assigned a signaling word which, for groups with narrowband channels, constantly contains a unique bit pattern, for example with the highest priority. If a subscriber station wants to access a group of words in the high-speed channel, it sends out its own address and possibly priority data in a signaling word. If this bit pattern is not disturbed, the subscriber station immediately occupies the assigned group of words in the high-speed channel for the transmission of a data packet. The priorities of individual subscriber stations can be taken into account in various ways. If the bit pattern of the groups with narrowband channels receives the highest priority, they are automatically protected against access as a high-speed channel, and a central unit can flexibly increase the number of narrowband channels by sending this bit pattern in the signaling word of another group.
