Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim
83 words
A process for the preparation of nonionic surfactants having a narrow molecular weight distribution which comprises reacting higher monohydric alcohols having from 8 to 20 carbon atoms or difunctional propylene oxide polymers having an average molecular weight from 1000 to 5000 with ethylene oxide at a temperature at which the reaction proceeds in the presence of a catalytic amount of the reaction product of barium hydroxide or barium hydroxide hydrates and a lower monohydric aliphatic alcohol having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
18 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the temperature at which the reaction proceeds is from 50°C to 270°C.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
23 words
The process of claim lor 2 wherein the reactive hydrogen compound is an aliphatic monohydric alcohol having from 8 to 20 carbon atoms.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
20 words
The process of claim 1 to 3 wherein the lower monohydric alcohol is removed from the reaction mixture by distillation.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
47 words
The process of claim 1 to 4 wherein the amount of the reactive hydrogen compound added to the reaction mixture is sufficient to convert all of the reaction product of barium hydroxide or barium hydroxide hydrates and lower alcohol basic salts to a higher alcohol basic salt.
