Abstract

Abstract Apparatus for conducting continuous biocatalytic reactions comprises a first zone (23) and a second zone (17) separated each from the other at least in part by a semipermeable membrane. In use, the membrane is permeable to predetermined reactant and product materials while impermeable to catalytically active microbial cell material essentially confluently packed within the second zone (17). The reactant material supplied to the first zone (23) permeates the membrane and contacts catalyst in the second zone (17) thereby forming product material. Product material permeates the membrane and is removed from the first zone (23).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 87 words
A biocatalytic reactor comprising a first zone and a second zone separated each from the other at least in part by a semipermeable membrane, said membrane being permeable to predetermined reactant and product materials while impermeable to catalytically active microbial cell material confluently packed in said second zone, said microbial cell material being selected such that when in contact with said reactant said product is formed, means for ingress of said reactant to said first zone and means for egress of said product from said first zone.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 87 words
A biocatalytic reactor comprising a first zone and a second zone separated each from the other at least in part by a semipermeable membrane, said membrane being permeable to predetermined reactant and product materials while impermeable to catalytically active microbial cell material confluently packed in said second zone, said microbial cell material being selected such that when in contact with said reactant said product is formed, means for ingress of said reactant to said first zone and means for egress of said product from said first zone.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 13 words
The apparatus of Claim 1 wherein said semipermeable membrane is an anisotropic membrane.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 13 words
The apparatus of Claim 1 wherein sad semipermeable membrane is a nonanisotropic membrane.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
The apparatus of Claim 1 wherein said semipermeable membrane is a semipermeable hollow fiber membrane.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
The apparatus of Claim 1 wherein said microbial cell material occupies greater than about 50 percent of said second zone volume utilized.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 106 words
A process for conducting a biocatalytic reaction which comprises passing a predetermined reactant material into a first zone enclosed at least in part by a semipermeable membrane boundary which is permeable to said reactant and a predetermined product of said reaction such that said reactant permeates said membrane and contacts catalytically active microbial cell material confluently packed within a second zone separated from said first zone at least in part by said membrane which is essentially impermeable to said microbial cell material, said contact results in conversion of said reactant to said product, said product permeates said semipermeable membrane and is removed from said first zone.
Claim 8
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 13 words
The process of Claim 6 wherein said semipermeable membrane is an anisotropic membrane.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 13 words
The process of Claim 6 wherein said semipermeable membrane is a nonanisotropic membrane.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 15 words
The process of Claim 6 wherein said semipermeable membrane is a semipermeable hollow fiber membrane.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 22 words
The process of Claim 6 wherein said microbial cell material occupies greater than about 50 percent of said second zone volume utilized.
