Abstract

Abstract A method of correcting errors in binary data which may represent a digital television signal, comprises dividing the data into a plurality of first blocks, each first block comprising a first plurality of, say sixty, data words (W o , etc) and a second plurality of, say six, check words (K o , etc), and further deriving a parity check block for a plurality of the first blocks. Each check word is derived in dependence on all the data words in the first block and each other check word in the first block. One check word may be derived by modulo-2 addition and the remaining check words may be derived by respective primitive polynominal generators.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 90 words
A method of correcting errors in binary data, the method comprising assembling the data into a plurality of data blocks, each said data block comprising a first plurality of data words (W 0 , etc) and a second plurality of check words (K 0 , etc), characterised in that each said check word is derived in dependence on all said data words in said data block and each other said check word in said data block, and a parity check block is derived for a plurality of said data blocks.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 90 words
A method of correcting errors in binary data, the method comprising assembling the data into a plurality of data blocks, each said data block comprising a first plurality of data words (W 0 , etc) and a second plurality of check words (K 0 , etc), characterised in that each said check word is derived in dependence on all said data words in said data block and each other said check word in said data block, and a parity check block is derived for a plurality of said data blocks.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 84 words
A method according to claim 1 wherein after transmission and reception or recording and reproduction of said binary data, said check words (K 0 , etc) are used to detect and to correct errors in said data words (W O , etc) and said check words (K 0 , etc), and said parity check block is used to correct errors in said data words (W 0 , etc) which have been detected by but not corrected by said check words (K 0 , etc).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 79 words
A method according to claim 2 wherein one of said check words (K 0 , etc) in each said second plurality of check words (K O , etc) is derived by modulo-2 addition and each of the remaining said check words (K 0 , etc) in each said second plurality of check words (K 0 , etc) is derived by a respective primitive polynomial generator each using a respective function of the extension field of a common generator polynomial.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 46 words
A method according to claim 3 wherein said binary data represents a digital television signal and said parity check block is derived by modulo-2 addition of a plurality of said first blocks, said first blocks respectively belonging to spaced horizontal line scans in a television signal.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 12 words
A method according to claim 4 wherein said second plurality is six.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 96 words
A method according to claim 5 wherein after transmission and reception or recording and reproduction of said binary data, six syndromes (SO, etc) are generated for each said data block from the received or reproduced said data words (W 0 , etc) and said check words (K 0 , etc) of said data block, four of said syndromes (S 0 , etc) being used to detect errors and derive error positions and error patterns for correcting said errors and the remaining two syndromes (S0, etc) being used to check the validity of said derived error patterns.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 85 words
A method according to any one of claims 3 to 6 where said data words (W 0 , etc) and said check words (K 0 , etc) are each 8-bit words and said check words (K 0 , etc) are used to correct errors in said data words (W 0 , etc) and said check words (K 0 , etc) only when an error pattern detected by said check words (K 0 , etc) is either a 9-bit burst error or any 2-bit error pattern.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 30 words
A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein said binary data represents a digital television signal, said first plurality is sixty and said second plurality is six.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 88 words
Apparatus for correcting errors in binary data, the apparatus comprising means (40) for assembling the data into a plurality of data blocks, each said data block comprising a first plurality of data words and a second plurality of check words, characterised by means (41) for deriving each said check word in dependence on all said data words in said data block and each other said check word in said data block, and means (42) for further deriving a parity check block for a plurality of said data blocks.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 88 words
Apparatus for correcting errors in binary data, the apparatus comprising means (40) for assembling the data into a plurality of data blocks, each said data block comprising a first plurality of data words and a second plurality of check words, characterised by means (41) for deriving each said check word in dependence on all said data words in said data block and each other said check word in said data block, and means (42) for further deriving a parity check block for a plurality of said data blocks.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 62 words
Apparatus according to claim 9 wherein one of said check words in each said second plurality of check words is derived by modulo-2 addition and each of the remaining said check words in each said second plurality of check words is derived by a respective primitive polynomial generator each using a respective function of the extension field of a common generator polynomial.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 45 words
Apparatus according to claim 10 wherein said binary data represents a digital television signal and said parity check block is derived by modulo-2 addition of a plurality of said first blocks, said first blocks respectively belonging to spaced horizontal line scans in a television signal.
