Abstract

Abstract Spark ignited internal combustion engine of the reciprocal piston type, having inlet means 7 for substantially tangentially introducing a combustible mixture into a combustion chamber 6 to generate a swirling motion of the mixture and provided with means 16 for breaking up the swirling motion so as to produce turbulence at or near the end of the compression stroke of the piston 3.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 148 words
, An internal combustion " engine comprising a cylinder block having a cylinder bore therein, a cylinder head mounted on said cylinder block and having an inner wall, a piston reciprocally moveable in said cylinder bore, thereby defining a combustion chamber of varying geometry, an intake valve movably mounted in said cylinder head and cooperating with inlet means for introducing a combustible mixture substantially tangentially into said combustion chamber to generate a swirling motion of the combustible mixture, an exhaust valve movably mounted in said cylinder head and cooperating with outlet means for discharging an exhaust gas from the combustion chamber, and a device for producing ignition within said combustion chamber, which combustion chamber houses a spoiling device for breaking up the swirling motion so as to produce turbulence in the form of small scale eddies at or near the end of the compression stroke of the piston.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 148 words
, An internal combustion " engine comprising a cylinder block having a cylinder bore therein, a cylinder head mounted on said cylinder block and having an inner wall, a piston reciprocally moveable in said cylinder bore, thereby defining a combustion chamber of varying geometry, an intake valve movably mounted in said cylinder head and cooperating with inlet means for introducing a combustible mixture substantially tangentially into said combustion chamber to generate a swirling motion of the combustible mixture, an exhaust valve movably mounted in said cylinder head and cooperating with outlet means for discharging an exhaust gas from the combustion chamber, and a device for producing ignition within said combustion chamber, which combustion chamber houses a spoiling device for breaking up the swirling motion so as to produce turbulence in the form of small scale eddies at or near the end of the compression stroke of the piston.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 50 words
An internal combustion engine according to claim 1, wherein a raised portion is formed on the inner wall of the cylinder head, thereby defining the combustion chamber at the end of the compression stroke and having a cross sectional area substantially smaller than the cross-sectional area of the cylinder bore.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 44 words
An internal combustion engine according to claim 1, wherein a lower portion is formed on the piston, thereby defining the combustion chamber at the end of the compression stroke and having a cross-sectional area substantially smaller than the crosssectional area of the cylinder bore.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 32 words
An internal combustion engine according to any one of the claims 1-3,wherein the spoiling device comprises a protrusion substantially eccentrically arranged in the combustion chamber at the end of the compression stroke.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 16 words
An internal combustion engine according to claim 4, wherein the protrusion is mounted on the piston.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 17 words
An internal combustion engine according to claim 4, wherein the protrusion is mounted on the cylinder head.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 42 words
An internal combustion engine according to any of the claims 1-6, wherein the spoiling device is substantially centrally arranged with respect to the cylinder bore and substantially eccentrically arranged with respect to the combustion chamber at the end of the compression stroke.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 47 words
An internal combustion engine according to any one of the claims 1-6, wherein the combustion chamber at the end of the compression stroke is substantially centrally arranged with respect to the cylinder bore and the spoiling device is substantially eccentrically arranged with respect to the combustion chamber.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 30 words
An internal combustion engine according to any one of the claims 1-8, wherein the ignition device is arranged in a quiescent zone of the combustion chamber near the spoiling device.
