Abstract

Abstract A non-glaring type reflector employing a liquid crystal layer (15) which is composed of liquid crystal matrix and dichroic coloring matter, and which provide a dynamic scattering effect or phase transition effect by applying an electric field. Except on the non-glaring operation, the molecular orientation of the liquid crystal matrix and dichroic coloring matter is uniform to cause a transparent state. On the non-glaring operation, the molecular orientation is at random, thereby the incident light is scattered by the liquid crystal matrix and the scattered light is absorbed by the dichroic coloring matter to result a decreased reflectance. The reflectance is controlled by applying a voltage into the liquid crystal layer.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 86 words
A non-glaring type reflector comprising: a liquid crystal layer (15) having electrode films (14, 16) at the both end surface thereof, which varies the molecular axis orientation by an applied voltage, a transparent substrate (12) placed at an incident side suface of said liquid crystal layer, a substrate (24) placed at the another side surface of said liquid crystal layer and including a reflection layer (22) to reflect the incident light, wherein, said liquid crystal layer is consist of liquid crystal matrix and dichroic coloring matter.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 86 words
A non-glaring type reflector comprising: a liquid crystal layer (15) having electrode films (14, 16) at the both end surface thereof, which varies the molecular axis orientation by an applied voltage, a transparent substrate (12) placed at an incident side suface of said liquid crystal layer, a substrate (24) placed at the another side surface of said liquid crystal layer and including a reflection layer (22) to reflect the incident light, wherein, said liquid crystal layer is consist of liquid crystal matrix and dichroic coloring matter.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 43 words
A non-glaring type reflector according to Claim 1, wherein, said liquid crystal layer (15) is in a transparent state caused by the uniform molecular axis orientation when no electric-field is applied, and provide a dynamic scattering effect when an electric field is applied.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 67 words
A non-glaring type reflector according to Claim I or 2 Wherein, said liquid crystal matrix is composed of mixed cholesteric and nematic liquid crystal, which causes such a phase transition effect that: the refractive index of light is ununiform in said liquid crystal matrix when no electric field is applied, and the molecular axis orientation is uniform with an applied electric field, thereby making a transparent state.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
A non-glaring type reflector according to Claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein said dichroic coloring matter is mixed in 0.3 - 3 weight %.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
A non-glaring type reflector according to one of proceeding claims, wherein said reflection layer (22) of said substrate is included into said electrode film (16).
