Abstract

Abstract A communication system comprises a plurality of remote stations (2) serially connected in a communication loop (10) to a control station (8). Communication of intelligence to and from the remote stations (2) and to and from the control station (8) is by way of high frequency bits which are introduced serially and circulate through the loop (10). An inoperative remote station (21 is bypassed by introducing into the station to be bypassed a DC signal of controlled magnitude, duration and polarity, which, by means of a by-pass module (4), disconnects the station from the communication loop (10) while maintaining the integrity of the loop.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 107 words
A communication system wherein intelligence is transmitted by means of high frequency bits to a plurality of stations (2) connected in series in a communication loop (10), characterised by by-pass means (4) for bypassing and unbypassing a particular one of the stations (2), the by-pass means (4) comprising means (19, 22) for generating a direct current (DC) pulse of forward or reverse polarity in the station next preceding said particular station, and means in said particular station responsive to said DC pulses to bypass the station in response to a forward polarity DC pulse and to unbypass the station in response to a reverse polarity DC pulse.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 107 words
A communication system wherein intelligence is transmitted by means of high frequency bits to a plurality of stations (2) connected in series in a communication loop (10), characterised by by-pass means (4) for bypassing and unbypassing a particular one of the stations (2), the by-pass means (4) comprising means (19, 22) for generating a direct current (DC) pulse of forward or reverse polarity in the station next preceding said particular station, and means in said particular station responsive to said DC pulses to bypass the station in response to a forward polarity DC pulse and to unbypass the station in response to a reverse polarity DC pulse.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
A communication system according to claim 1, wherein the means for generating a DC pulse includes means (19, 22) for generating a DC pulse of controlled magnitude and duration.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 105 words
A communication system according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the means for bypassing and unbypassing said particular station includes a polarity sensitive relay (K 1 ) which when energized by a DC pulse of forward polarity disconnects the station (2) from the communication loop (10) and substantially simultaneously closes a shunt in the communication loop around said particular station to thereby maintain the integrity of the communication loop while said particular station is bypassed, and which when energized by a DC pulse of reverse polarity reconnects the station in the communication loop and substantially simultaneously opens said shunt to thereby reactivate the station.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 39 words
A communication system according to claim 1, claim 2 or claim 3, wherein said particular station (2) includes a module (6) responsive to the high frequency bits and means inhibiting passage of the DC pulses to the module (6).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 26 words
A communication system according to claim 4, wherein the means inhibiting passage of the DC pulses to the module (6) is an isolating transformer (15, 17).
