Abstract

Abstract @ A system for incorporation in ion-beam equipment to provide ion species filtering and optional ion beam blanking. The system comprises four magnets 4, 5, 6 and 7 arranged on an axis 1. lnbetween magnets 5 and 6 is arranged a plate 10 having an offaxis aperture 11. The ion beam, shown under reference 2, is caused to converge to a focus on plane 3 where the plate 10 is situated. When the magnets 4-7 are energised, the ion beam is caused to bend in the manner shown in drawing A, the amount of deflection depending upon the charge-to-mass ratio of the ion species within the beam. If constructed correctly, the aperture 11 can thus be arranged to pass only a single ion species, the remainder colliding with and being absorbed by the plate 10. Beam blanking may optionally be achieved by blanking plates 13 which may be used to deflect the ion beam out of the plane of parts A and B of the drawing - this is shown in part D of the drawing where it will be seen that the resultant focal point 17 of the ion beam is displaced away from the aperture 11 so that the whole ion beam is blanked off. Astigmatism introduced into the system may be reduced or eliminated by the use of octopole electrode sets 14 and 15.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 52 words
. 1. Ion beam apparatus having an ion-optical system comprising deflection means for deflecting an incident ion beam by an amount dependent on the ion species, and an aperture through which one or more selected species of ion within said ion beam may pass to thereby eliminate unwanted species from the beam.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 64 words
Ion beam apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein said deflecting means comprises a pair of magnets situated in the path of the ion beam above said aperture and operable to deflect the incident ion beam into a path parallel to that of the incident beam but spaced therefrom by an amount dependent upon the charge-to-mass ratio of the ion species within the beam.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 48 words
Ion beam apparatus as claimed in either one of claims 1 or 2 including further deflecting means situated in the path of the ion beam beyond said aperture and operable to deflect the ion beam emerging from the aperture back to the axis of the incident ion beam.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
Ion beam apparatus as claimed in claim 3 wherein said further deflecting means comprises a pair of magnets respectively axially spaced along the ion beam and having mutually oppositely-directed magnetic fields.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 43 words
Ion beam apparatus as claimed in any one of the preceding claims ' including still further deflecting means for deflecting said ion beam in such a way that no component of the beam passes through the aperture whereby the beam is blanked off.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 23 words
Ion beam apparatus as claimed in claim 5 wherein said further deflecting means is the same deflection means as said first-mentioned deflecting means.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 45 words
Ion beam apparatus as claimed in claim 5 .wherein said further deflecting means comprises a pair of blanking plates upstream of said first-mentioned deflecting means and across which an electric field may be set up in order to deflect the beam for blanking as aforsaid.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 45 words
Ion beam apparatus as claimed in either one of claims 5 or 7 wherein said further deflecting means is operable to deflect the beam away from its axis of incidence in a direction perpendicular to the direction of deflection caused by said first-mentioned deflection means.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 35 words
Ion beam apparatus as claimed in any one of the preceding claims including means for causing the incident ion beam to converge to a focus in a plane coincident with the plane of said apparatus.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 48 words
Ion beam apparatus as claimed in claim 9 wherein all of said magnets forming the first and second deflection means are identical electromagnets which are positioned symmetrically along the axis of the incident ion beam about a plane perpendicular to said axis and passing through the focal plane.
