Abstract

Abstract A supervisor for data processing system capable of utilizing a plurality of operating systems includes apparatus for identifying a condition in the data processing system requiring a different operating system. A reserved memory area associated with the currently active operating system is then addressed and the register contents of the central processing unit are stored in the reserved memory area. The reserved memory of the operating system being activated is addressed and causes the address of the reserved memory of the operating system being activated, the data related to permitting the physical memory associated with the operating system being activated, contents of registers safestored in the reserve-memory, and data establishing the decor of the operating system being activated all to be entered in the central processing unit. The operating system to be activated is then enabled, and execution of permitted instructions by the second operating system is begun. The physical memory locations are determined by a real address through use of a paging mechanism permitting storage of portions of the operating systems in non-contiguous groups of locations while isolating the memory available to each operating system.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 192 words
1 . A data processing system characterized by the combination comprising: a memory unit having a plurality of primary groups of memory locations, each such group storing instructions; execution means, for executing sequences of instructions, which executes instructions from a currently active primary group of memory locations until a predetermined condition is detected; transfer means responsive to addresses formed by the execution means for transferring instructions between the memory unit and the execution means; the memory means further including a plurality of groups of reserve memory locations, each associated with a respective primary group, wherein the reserve groups cannot be addressed by'instructions in the primary groups, the reserve groups including instructions for activating and inactivating the associated primary groups, each reserve group further including an address identifying a location of each reserve group containing that address; register means for storing the reserve group address for the reserve group associated with the currently . active primary group; means responsive to the predetermined condition and the register means for addressing the currently active reserve group; and means for storing the reserve group address in the register means when the associated primary group is. activated.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 192 words

A data processing system characterized by the combination comprising: a memory unit having a plurality of primary groups of memory locations, each such group storing instructions; execution means, for executing sequences of instructions, which executes instructions from a currently active primary group of memory locations until a predetermined condition is detected; transfer means responsive to addresses formed by the execution means for transferring instructions between the memory unit and the execution means; the memory means further including a plurality of groups of reserve memory locations, each associated with a respective primary group, wherein the reserve groups cannot be addressed by'instructions in the primary groups, the reserve groups including instructions for activating and inactivating the associated primary groups, each reserve group further including an address identifying a location of each reserve group containing that address; register means for storing the reserve group address for the reserve group associated with the currently . active primary group; means responsive to the predetermined condition and the register means for addressing the currently active reserve group; and means for storing the reserve group address in the register means when the associated primary group is. activated.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
A system according to Claim 1, characterized in that each of the primary groups stores an operating system program.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 77 words
A system according to either previous. Claim, characterized in that the execution means includes decor register means for storing decor code and comparison means for comparing the operation code of an instruction and the decor code to determine if execution of the related instruction is permitted; each reserve groups includes a decor code permitting execution of instructions of the associated primary group; and transfer means for transferring a decor code associated with a primary group being activated.
