Abstract

In a method for controlling a multiplexable, bistable liquid crystal display, a first operating voltage (V 1 ) which is greater than a first limit voltage (V 01 ) is applied to the selected display elements and a second operating voltage (V 2 ) which is less than a second limit voltage (Vg 2 ) to the unselected display elements. At the first operating voltage (V 1 ) only a first optical state (Z1) is stable, at the second operating voltage (V 2 ) only a second optical state (Z2). All display elements can be displayed simultaneously via a single write voltage pulse. This ensures a high-contrast, constant and immediate display of the entire display area. However, line-by-line writing is also possible. In addition, a liquid crystal display based on the bistability effect is presented with a guest-host liquid crystal (30) which contains a chiral additive. The layer thickness (d) of the liquid crystal (30) is less than 10 μm and the ratio of layer thickness (d) and pitch (p) of the guest-host liquid crystal (30) is between 0.5 and 1.75. Spread over the whole. Spacers (24) are provided in the field of view.
