Abstract
Abstract Intermittent contacts between a flying transducer head and a magnetic record medium are monitored by detecting triboelectric charges generated by such contacts. Different amounts and polarities of triboelectric charge are generated by different materials on the surface of the record medium. …<??>The flight of the head when it is out of contact with the record medium can be monitored by detecting variations in the displacement current generated as the head flies over the record medium.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim
35 words
A method of monitoring the flight of a magnetic transducer head on an air bearing over a magnetic record medium, comprising detecting triboelectric charges generated by intermittent contacts between the head and the record medium.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
35 words
A method of monitoring the flight of a magnetic transducer head on an air bearing over a magnetic record medium, comprising detecting triboelectric charges generated by intermittent contacts between the head and the record medium.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
78 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, in which the flight being monitored is that of the head over a magnetic record medium comprising a dispersion of magnetic particles and load-bearing particles in a binder and in which at least some of the load-bearing particles protrude above the magnetic particles and the binder, the sign and quantity of triboelectric charge generated at an individual contact being indicative of whether or not that contact was with a load-bearing particle.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
66 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, in which the flight being monitored is that of the head over a magnetic record medium having some surface portions covered with a lubricant material and other surface portions uncovered, the triboelectric charge generated at an individual contact being indicative of whether that contact was with a lubricant-covered portion of the medium or an uncovered portion of the medium.
Claim 5
Independent Claim
36 words
A method as claimed in any preceding claim, further including detecting variations in the displacement current generated as the head flies over the record medium when the head is out of contact with the record medium.
