Abstract

Abstract An apparatus for inspecting a device (10) made up of a plurality of different infrared radiating elements (12) includes an optical head (14) which is moveable along X-Y coordinates above the fixed device (10) to sequentially scan the infrared radiating elements (12). A laser beam source (16) is operatively connected to the moveable head (14) for injecting thermal energy into the infrared radiating elements (12) and an infrared detector (22) is provided for sensing the infrared radiation emanating from the elements (12). The infrared detector (22) may be mounted directly on the moveable head (14) or in a remote location wherein the detector (22) would be connected to the moveable head (14) by a flexible optical fiber (24). A second moveable head may be located on the opposite side of the device so that thermal energy from the laser source may be injected into opposite sides of the infrared radiating element.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 74 words
An apparatus for inspecting a device made up of a plurality of different infrared radiating elements comprising means for mounting said device in a fixed position, moveable head means adapted to be moved along orthogonal axes in close proximity to said device, radiation means operatively associated with said moveable head for injecting thermal energy into said device and detecting means operatively associated with said moveable head for detecting infrared radiation emanating from said device.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 74 words
An apparatus for inspecting a device made up of a plurality of different infrared radiating elements comprising means for mounting said device in a fixed position, moveable head means adapted to be moved along orthogonal axes in close proximity to said device, radiation means operatively associated with said moveable head for injecting thermal energy into said device and detecting means operatively associated with said moveable head for detecting infrared radiation emanating from said device.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 34 words
An apparatus as set forth in Claim 1 wherein said radiation means is comprised of a fixed laser beam source and optical fiber means are connecting said laser beam source to said moveable head.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 39 words
An apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said detector means are fixed and optical fiber means are connected between said moveable head and said detector means for transmitting infrared radiation to said detector means for said device.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
An apparatus as set forth in Claim 1 wherein said detector means is mounted on said moveable head for detecting radiation emanating from said device.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 77 words
An apparatus as set forth in Claim 1 wherein said radiation means is comprised of a laser beam source, a second head moveable on the opposite side of said device for movement corresponding to the movement of said first mentioned head and optical fiber means connecting said laser beam source to said second moveable head for injecting thermal energy into said device from one side and detecting infrared radiation emanating from the opposite side of said device.
