Abstract

Abstract An apparatus for igniting the particulates trapped in a particulate filter (14) used with a diesel engine (10) supplied with fuel containing an agent for reducing the ignition temperature of the particulates said apparatus monitoring physical operating parameters of the engine (10) and filter (14) and igniting said particulates when a predetermined concentration of particulates at which the particulates will undergo self-sustained combustion has accumulated in the filter (14).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 281 words
An exhaust purifying system in combination with a diesel engine having an exhaust conduit (12) into which combustion byproducts including carbon particulates are discharged, the system comprising, in combination: means effective to supply fuel to the engine to undergo combustion; a filter (14) disposed in the exhaust conduit effective to collect the carbon particulates in the combustion byproducts, the pressure in the exhaust conduit upstream of the filter having a value related to the concentration of the carbon particulates collected by the filter and to the flow of the combustion byproducts; means (45) effective to measure the pressure in the exhaust conduit upstream of the filter; and means (16) effective to ignite the carbon particulates collected by the filter; characterised in that the system includes an agent in the fuel effective to lower the combustion temperature of the carbon particulates in the combustion byproducts so that a deposit of the carbon particulates of a predetermined concentration will undergo self-sustained combustion after ignition; circuit means (24, 26) responsive to a predetermined engine operating parameter representative of the flow rate of the combustion byproducts effective to provide a schedule of values of pressure in the exhaust conduit upstream of the filter that represents a collection of carbon particulates at the predetermined concentration; and means (34, 36) effective to measure the predetermined engine operating parameter; and the means (16) effective to ignite the carbon particulates collected by the .filter (14) is arranged to ignite the carbon particulates at least at one point on the filter when the measured pressure is equal to the scheduled pressure at the measured engine operating parameter, so that the collected carbon particulates undergo self-sustained combustion to regenerate the filter.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 281 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
An exhaust purifying system according to claim 1, characterised in that the predetermined engine operating parameter is engine speed.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 21 words
An exhaust purifying system according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the agent in the fuel is copper naphthenate.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 93 words
An exhaust purifying system according to claim 1, 2 or 3, characterised in that the means effective to ignite the carbon particulates is an ignition means (16), and the system includes means (24, 28) effective to inhibit the ignition means (16) from igniting the carbon particulates for a predetermined time period (TD3) following each ignition of the carbon particulates, the time period allowing the particulates to accumulate to the predetermined concentration in all areas of the filter (14) in the event self-sustained combustion did not occur resulting in partial regeneration of the filter.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 52 words
An exhaust purifying system according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the circuit means (26). is responsive to a number of engine speed ranges (RPM1R - RPM5R), including an'idle speed range (RPM1R), and controls the operation of the ignition means (16) in accordance with these engine speed ranges.
