Abstract
Abstract A modular toy assembly comprises a base 3, support frames, functional units (such as a flag 65, a roundabout 1 or big wheel 2) and a set of interchangeable gears. The base member 3 includes a plurality of circular holes arranged in intersecting rows on which support frames 44 are mounted by means of pegs. The support frames are provided with rows of holes conforming to the size of the holes of the base member 3. The gear members 6 include both bevel gearing teeth 62 and spur gearing teeth 63. They are specifically dimensioned and designed in relation to the pitch of the holes so that an interchangeable gear train can be assembled on the base member 3 and support frames 44 for transmission throughout the assembly with the axes of rotation of the gears parallel or pependicular both to the base 3 and to each other.

A modular toy comprising: a base member (3) having a plurality of first holes (32) arranged in intersecting rows thereon; supports (44) formed by elongate rods (41) and detachably mounted on said base member (3) by engagement with the first holes each of said elongate rods (41) having a row of second holes (42) equal in size to said first holes (32) and of equal pitch with them; circular toothed members (6) of radii which are related to the pitch of the holes; and means for rotatably and detachably mounting said circular toothed members (6) to the holes in said base member (3) and/or said elongate rods (41); characterised in that some or all of said circular toothed members (6) are provided with bevel gearing teeth (62) and spur gearing teeth (63) and are of a thickness related to the pitch of the holes whereby they can engage each other while interchangably mounted on said base member (3) and/or said elongate rods (41) by said means (9) for rotation about axes both horizontal and vertical to said base member (3) and to each other.
