Abstract
Abstract A water-soluble carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose having a carboxymethyl degree of substitution of about 0.1 to about 0.25, preferably of about 0.15 to about 0.20, and having a hydroxyethyl molar substitution of greater than about 1.0 possesses unexpected qualities. When this composition is crosslinked with a suitable aluminum ion in an aqueous solution it forms a gel which exhibits no significant thinning at temperatures less than about 200°F.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
67 words
A water-soluble carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose selected from carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose having a carboxymethyl degree of substitution of about 0.1 to about 0.25 and a hydroxyethyl molar substitution greater than about 1.0 characterized in that the carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose is contacted with a suitable aluminum ion whereby a crosslinked carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose is formed which exhibits no significant thinning when used in environments at temperatures less than 200°F.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
19 words
The crosslinked carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose of claim 1 wherein aluminum acetate is the source of the suitable aluminum ion.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
35 words
A gel formed in aqueous solution characterized in that the gel is prepared with the crosslinked carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose of claim 1 and exhibits no significant thinning in environments at temperatures less than about 200°F.
