Abstract
Abstract A water soluble salt formed between an alkaloid, for instance, nicotine and polymeric acid, for instance a polysaccharide, may be used as the sole or main binder and viscosity regulator in a printing ink. A product comprising a substrate carrying printed deposits of such a salt may be used as the wrapper for a smoking rod.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim
36 words
A printing ink containing a solution of a water soluble salt formed between an acid and an alkaloid characterised in that the salt serves as binder and viscosity regulator and the acid is a polymeric acid.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
36 words
A printing ink containing a solution of a water soluble salt formed between an acid and an alkaloid characterised in that the salt serves as binder and viscosity regulator and the acid is a polymeric acid.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
47 words
An ink according to claim 1, in which the alkaloid, binder and viscosity regulator components of the ink consist substantially only of the aqueous solution of the salt and the ink optionally contains one or more additives selected from colouring agents, flavourant, smoke producers and burn modifiers.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
19 words
An ink according to claim 1, in which the alkaloid is selected from nicotine; anabasine and nornicotine, preferably nicotine.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
44 words
An ink according to any preceding claim in which the polymeric acid is a polysaccharide selected from alginic acid, pectic acid and cellulose and in which the polysaccharide preferably has been modified to increase its acidic content by carboxyalkylation or reaction with polybasic acid.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
24 words
An ink according to any preceding claim in which the amount of alkaloid is at least 40% by weight of polymeric acid and alkaloid.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
22 words
An ink according to claim 1 in which the amount of the salt in the solution is at least 20% by weight.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
15 words
An ink according to claim 1 having a viscosity of from 10 to 500 poise.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
35 words
A process of printing in which an ink is printed onto a substrate, preferably by gravure or screen printing, characterised in that the ink is an ink according to any of claims 1 to 7.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
39 words
A printed product, preferably a smoking rod wrapper, comprising a substrate, preferably paper, carrying printed deposits of a water soluble salt formed between an alkaloid and an acid characterised in that the acid is a polymeric acid, preferably a polysaccharide acid.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
39 words
A printed product, preferably a smoking rod wrapper, comprising a substrate, preferably paper, carrying printed deposits of a water soluble salt formed between an alkaloid and an acid characterised in that the acid is a polymeric acid, preferably a polysaccharide acid.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
32 words
A product according to claim 9, in which the alkaloid is substantially entirely present as a salt with the polymeric acid, the alkaloid is nicotine, and the polymeric acid is a polysaccharide.
