Abstract

Abstract @ There is disclosed a method of permanently joining conductive electrical components comprising placing portions of the two components in surface to surface contact and passing a rapidly rotating wheel across a surface of one of the portions (3) opposed to the said surface in contact, whereby instantaneously a high energy level is created at the surfaces (5) in contact and a bond is formed between them. Particular importance for the method is in the attachment of flexible conductors to the terminal pads of printed circuit boards. The method can also be used in resoldering components together, and in cable-jointing operations.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 16 words
Conductive electrical components permanently connected together by bonding the components together without the application of heat.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 16 words
Conductive electrical components permanently connected together by bonding the components together without the application of heat.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 54 words
Electrical components according to Claim 1 wherein, the welding is performed by passing a swiftly- rotating friction wheel across a surface on one of the components while an opposite surface of the component is in contact with a surface of the other of the components, whereby to form the bond at the contacting surfaces.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
Electrical components according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein one component is a printed circuit board and the other is a chip or chip carrier.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
Electrical components according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein one component is a printed circuit board and the other is a flexible conductor strip.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 52 words
Electrical components accordingto Claim 4, wherein the printed circuit board has an array of terminal pads adjacent its edge and the flexible conductor strip has a registering array of conductors, the weld between respective pads and conductors of the array being formed by a single pass of the wheel across the array.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
Electrical components according to Claim 3, Claim 4 or Claim 5, wherein the bonding is achieved through a brazing or soldering interlayer.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 34 words
Electrical components according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein one of the components is at an end portion of an outer conductor of a cable and the other is a cable jointing element.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 35 words
Electrical components according to Claim 7, wherein the cable jointing element is a wire braid sleeve fitted over the end portion and bonded also to a coaxially juxtaposed said end portion of a separate cable.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 28 words
Electrical components according to Claim 7 or Claim 8, wherein solid metal is additionally bonded to at least one of the outer conductor and the cable jointing element.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 61 words
A method of permanently joining conductive electrical components comprising placing portions of the two components in surface to surface contact and pressing a rapidly rotating wheel across a surface of one of the portions opposed to the said surface in contact, whereby instantaneously a high energy level is created at the surfaces in contact and a bond is formed between them.
